This picture was taken at the Neue Wache in Berlin, Germany. This is the Käthe Kollwitz sculpture Mother with her Dead Son at the World War II war memorial. The statue is completely open to the elements. It’s absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking to behold in person, especially when you hear the story about Käthe’s son and how he asked her for permission to go to war prior to his eighteenth birthday. He died in action a few days shy of his eighteenth.
